Country Diary of a Lady: 01/02/2014

I woke up to the beauty of winter, as seen through a wall of windows.  I drove north yesterday, and am now a few miles south of Lake Superior.  So, this morning the fine mist of lake effect snow was drifting gently out over the pond in front of the A-frame cabin, and now the sun is turning the white banks on the far side of the pond into a sheen of pearl.

I just came in from snowshoeing around the pond, and my cheeks are bright from the exertion.  We crossed the pond in two different places, and the small swamp willows (?) that grow on the marshy side of the pond tinkled as we moved through them, a thin sheet of ice coating their small branches.  The snow was deep with about an inch thick top crust which we broke through easily enough.

I had let Andrew set our trail.  It was cold, but warmer than the other day.  Perhaps Lake Superior is protecting us from the brunt.  But, it is still below zero this morning at 11:13 A.M.

It is just a short reprieve from the world, but I am enjoying this time with my family.
